When Nick Jonas was 21, he had a decision to make.

The Jonas Brothers were no more. What would he do next?

"There was a really kind of bizarre time in my life, going back to October of 2012 or 2013," the musician and actor tells EW. "The brothers and I [had] split up, and at 21 years old I was kind of looking at my life, taking stock of my career and wondering if I was going to be a washed-up has-been at 21."

Then he read a script for a series called Kingdom (though it was titled Navy St. at the time).

And just like that, Jonas saw his next career move: a gritty drama set in the world of mixed martial arts. But he'd have to work to make it happen, especially when he was told, as he puts it, "They were not going to cast a Jonas brother in this role."

Thankfully, much like the character he'd go on to play, Nate Kulina, Jonas proved he had the necessary fight to land the part.
